The curriculum at Drouin Primary School is based on the philosophy that children learn best when their experiences at school are structured to take into account different learning styles. Some children learn best when tasks are “hands on” others work well in groups, with a partner or alone. While Literacy and Numeracy are at the heart of our teaching we provide an innovative and broad curriculum during our Active Learning times in Prep to Grade 6.

During this time we actively engage our children in the planning, organisation and evaluation of their learning. Active Learning allows children the opportunities to put into practice explicit teachings while challenging their thinking, developing their curiosity, teaching and practising collaboration and problem solving.

The children help develop criteria to ascertain levels of achievement, and feedback is given by peers and the teacher to challenge the next level of thinking for each student.

Computer technology plays a significant role in the education of all of our children. We have a well resourced Computer Laboratory as well as desk tops and laptops in every classroom. These are used to support Literacy, Numeracy and General Studies ( History, Science, Humanities) in every class. The use of Electronic Whiteboards in every classroom allows opportunities for interactive learning and etching at all levels.

Specialist programs offered at Drouin include visual arts, physical education, ICT, instrumental music and lunchtime whole school activities. Literacy intervention and support is a feature of our school, supporting all children’s individualised needs.
