The Department of Microbiology (along with the Departments of Agricultural Sciences, Botany, Zoology, and Environmental Management and Ecology) is part of the School of Life Sciences, one of the schools that comprise the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering.
The Department of Microbiology is balanced both for teaching and research in a variety of areas within microbiology. The Department has considerable links with outside institutes including industrial, agricultural, government and medical laboratories, with some research students being located there.

The Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering has a joint mission of teaching and research. We offer and teach various and innovative courses at Bachelor levels in a range of Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional), Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Business Information Systems, Bachelor of Computer Science in Game Technology and Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering degrees, Honours and post graduate degrees Master of Information Technology, Master of Computer Science, Master of ICT and Master of Biocomputing and Biometric Security. The School of Molecular Sciences is in the Faculty of Science, Technology & Engineering and consists of the Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics and the School of Pharmacy.
The School has a very strong research culture and attracts over $7 million in outside research grants per annum. The School has also been very active in developing new initiatives in teaching. These include the development of Medical Sciences and Chemical Science degrees, a new Immunology subject as well as the 2-year Masters in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. A new Medicinal Chemistry course is now being developed. It goes without saying that our teaching is informed by research.
The Department of Biochemistry has a joint mission of teaching and research. We teach Biochemistry at second and third year level in a range of Bachelor of Science degrees, Honours and post graduate degrees by research at Masters and PhD levels. We also administer the Biomedical Science degree and offer a Masters of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics coursework degree.
The Department has a very strong research culture. There are currently 17 research groups in Biochemistry, each one supported by substantial external funding, totalling more than $7 million per annum. Major research programs cover areas of protein chemistry, molecular and cell biology, biomedical science and biotechnology. Members of the Department are also part of the Cooperative Research Centre for Biomarker Translation and the Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science.
Our strength in research is demonstrated by the 2010 Excellence in Research for Australia ratings. In Biochemistry and Cell Biology, La Trobe was the only university whose research output was rated well above world standard (scoring the maximum 5).
The Department of Chemistry is a member of the School of Molecular Sciences and Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering. Chemistry is also part of the newly established La Trobe Institute for Molecular Sciences (LIMS), a $98M project that will provide new state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities for chemistry. The Institute will support, expand and extend the teaching and research work of the School of Molecular Sciences at La Trobe (including chemistry, biochemistry and genetics).
Chemistry is taught at all year levels in undergraduate study, from Bachelors degrees through to Honours. The Department offers postgraduate degrees by research at Masters and PhD level as well as a Masters of Chemical Science coursework degree.
Excellent facilities are available for research across a wide range of chemistry. All academic staff offer projects for qualified research applicants. The Honours and Masters projects are indicative of the particular research interests of each staff member. There are more than 25 postgraduate students in the Department.

The Department of Genetics has strong components of teaching and research. We teach Genetics at 1st, 2nd and 3rd year level in a range of Bachelor of Science degrees. We also teach in 2nd and 3rd year Conservation Biology and Ecology courses. We have a range of honours and PhD projects on offer. Major research programs in the Genetics department include: Nematode Functional Genomics, Human Variation, Stem Cell Growth and Differentiation, Molecular Embryology, Molecular Ecology, Molecular Evolution and Phylogenetics and Genomics. This diversity provides students with a broad experience in the application of modern genetics.
$64.1 million has been allocated by the Federal Government’s the Education Investment Fund for the establishment of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS). The Institute will support, expand and extend the teaching and research work of the School of Molecular Sciences at La Trobe.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy course was developed to address the serious shortage of pharmacists in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. Students study units in science and public health alongside students in other courses. Graduates can be employed in community or hospital pharmacies throughout Australia. Researchers at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) work to discover the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the ability of the adult brain to generate new nerve cells and form functional connections.
QBI is headed by Professor Perry F. Bartlett, ARC Federation Fellow, UQ Foundation Chair in Molecular Neuroscience and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
Neuroscience is entering an era of accelerated discovery driven by the application of new molecular, genetic and imaging technologies, which will provide a deeper understanding of the regulation and function of the nervous system.
Significant advances in determining the molecular regulation of nerve cell function and development will have a major impact on our understanding of more complex areas such as behaviour, cognition, ageing, neurological disease and mental illness.
Discoveries will also provide, for the first time, a real opportunity to develop new therapeutics to treat mental and neurological diseases, which account for a staggering 45 per cent of the disease burden in Australia.
A major goal for QBI researchers is to promote excellence in neuroscience by fostering the exchange of ideas, establishing new collaborations and augmenting partnerships that already exist within the wider UQ neuroscience community.
Continued research in neurogenesis is widely expected to lead to improved therapeutic treatments for a broad range of neurodegenerative conditions.
