Accessible outdoor camp in Blue Mountains receives development approval

Cox Architecture's design for an accessible outdoor adventure camp at the foot of the Blue Mountains has been granted development approval. According to the architect, the project, located at Camp Yarramundi on Dharug Country, "will be one of the first bush retreats in Australia where children and families of all abilities can fully participate in adventure."

Designed in collaboration with Invoke Property and Acardia Landscape Architecture for The Y NSW, the project comprises upgrades to the camp's existing recreation and dining facilities, and expansion of the accommodation to cater for 400 students, along with a new multipurpose facility with flexible spaces for community organisations, wellness programs and team-building retreats.

"Accessibility is often treated as an add-on," said Cox director Alex Small. "At Camp Yarramundi, it is the foundation. Every activity, trail and cabin has been designed from the outset to support kids of all abilities."

"This is about grassroots recreation, helping children connect with each other and with nature," she added.

Cox's design looks out onto rivers and forest, with modular clusters and verandahs arranged around outdoor garden rooms in a configuration designed to echo a kangaroo pawprint. Raised boardwalks, native landscaping and environmentally conscious materials are intended to minimise the project's ecological impact.

According to the firm's media release, the project "redefines what a bush camp can be: [with] spaces for gathering, play, rest and reflection, woven seamlessly with adventure … showing how design can remove barriers and expand possibilities for future generations."

The Y NSW CEO, Rob Kennaugh, commented, "For nearly 90 years, Camp Yarramundi has been a place where young people build friendships and live inspired lives. By connecting with nature, they can learn to overcome their fears and grow in confidence."

"We're creating a world-class outdoor experience where children and families of all abilities can share in a life-changing adventure," he said.
